Former President Jacob Zuma failed to appear on the first day of uMkhonto weSizwe’s election campaign in Limpopo, where he was scheduled to visit several villages in the province.

The party’s provincial leaders had announced a program earlier this week, stating that Zuma would seek support in Giyani, Thohoyandou, and Malumelele.

However, it has been confirmed by uMkhonto weSizwe spokesperson, Nhlamulo Baloyi, that the program was not approved by the party’s national structure.

Zuma was originally planned to pay tribute to struggle icons Peter Dambuza Malada and Collins Chabane by visiting their graves. Additionally, he was set to engage with traditional leaders during his visit.

However, due to the lack of approval from the party’s national structure, Zuma will now only lead uMkhonto weSizwe’s election campaign at Malumelele Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Despite the absence of the former president, some residents of Muyexe village near Giyani expressed their unwavering support for Zuma.

One resident, Eddie Hlungwani, stated that he was eagerly anticipating seeing Zuma, as he believed that Zuma had contributed to the development of the rural area back in 2009. Hlungwani mentioned that Zuma had prioritized rural areas, and as residents of the rural area, they would support him in his bid for the presidency.

However, it is important to note that the South African Constitution limits candidates to two terms at the Union Buildings, which means Zuma is ineligible to hold office again.

While some may have a desire to see him return, the constitutional restrictions prevent this possibility.

In conclusion, former President Jacob Zuma’s absence on the first day of uMkhonto weSizwe’s election campaign in Limpopo has caused disappointment among his supporters.

However, he will still lead the campaign at Malumelele Stadium on Saturday. Despite the support he receives, the South African Constitution prevents Zuma from seeking another term as president.
