Rulani Pens New Sundowns Contract

Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Rulani Mokwena has signed his new contract ending speculation about his future at the club.

Mokwena finished his first season as sole head coach at the club by winning the DStv Premiership Coach of the Season award and was part of a record-breaking 15-match winning run in the league during the 2022/23 season.

They wrapped up the title with a record seven games to spare and just one point shy of the overall points tally record but there was still uncertainty around his long-term future with Patrice Carteron surprisingly linked with the role.

As reported by SABC Sport, Mokwena has offered a four-year deal, with the initial hold-up in the deal being some tweaks in the technical team which he denied he insisted on.

“I think the technical team we have is a technical team the club trusts and is there to support the style of play and the way we want as a club to play football, it’s not the Rulani way, it’s the Sundowns way,” he said when asked about potential changes by iDiski Times at the Hyundai event at the end of the season.

“It’s a way that speaks not only to the culture and tradition of our club, because we have that, it might not be as deeply rooted with a number of years but there is talk in the culture that speaks to why we have the colours we have and the origination and being known as [the Brazilians] so for sure, it’s a way that the club wants to play.

“The technical team we have is already a technical team that is strong enough to be able to help us in this way, but we’ll look to improve both on and off the field and try to be better for sure next season.”

iDiski Times can confirm he put pen to paper this morning on his new contract but not much will be shaken up going into the new season as his current technical team, which he stated he’s happy to work with remains at the club.

Veteran goalkeeper Kennedy Mweene will serve as an assistant goalkeeper coach to Wendell Robinson, while the mid-season reshuffle of Steve Komphela as First Team Coach and Manqoba Mngqithi as Senior Coach remains the same.
