A recent incident in Verulam Central Business District, KwaZulu-Natal, has highlighted the vulnerability of even those who are tasked with protecting the community from crime.

In an unexpected turn of events, a police detective found himself in need of assistance and turned to a private security company for help.

According to the private security company Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA), the detective was robbed and attacked by two unidentified suspects while walking in an arcade in Verulam CBD.

The suspects allegedly choked him and forcibly took his Nokia phone. Undeterred, the detective pursued the assailants, firing two warning shots from his firearm in an attempt to apprehend them. However, due to injuries sustained during the attack, he was forced to abandon the chase near Gandhi Park, close to the Verulam Magistrates Court.

Realising the urgency of the situation, the detective borrowed a passerby’s phone and contacted RUSA for assistance. Reacting promptly, RUSA’s officers arrived at the scene at approximately 16:36 and conducted an extensive search for the suspects. Unfortunately, their efforts yielded no results.
