Bheki Cele Says ‘Thieves’ Who Broke Into Verulam Police Station Were Bored

In a shocking incident, the Verulam police station was broken into by three suspects on Wednesday night.

The forced entry was discovered when officers reported for duty on Thursday, prompting the security company Reaction Unit South Africa (Rusa) to be alerted.

Rusa was asked to be on the lookout for the three suspects responsible for breaking into various offices within the police station, including the sector managers, communications, and supply chain management offices.

Police minister Bheki Cele addressed the recent fatalities in KwaZulu-Natal, which included the mass murder of a family in Pietermaritzburg and a shoot-out between suspected criminals and police in Inanda.

However, he downplayed the significance of the police station break-in, stating that the criminals were merely “bored” and had only stolen a fan and plug. He expressed hope that they would face serious charges once apprehended.

This is not the first time the Verulam police station has been targeted by criminals. In July, a branded police vehicle was stolen from the station but later recovered nearby, missing its audio system and spare tire.

Furthermore, a hijacked Isuzu bakkie, which was later recovered by Rusa officers in Mhlasini, had also been stolen from the station last year.
