Banyana Banyana players have reportedly threatened to boycott their FIFA Women’s World Cup send-off match.

The team is set to play against Botswana at Tsakane Stadium on Sunday, 02 July 2023, but the match might not take place due to a number of issues according to Farpost.

It is believed the players do not want to play the send-off match in ‘substandard’ Tsakane Stadium and also demand R1m each for the group stages. Each player is set to get a cut of R572 000 but many thought that if Desiree Ellis’s charges progress to the next round, they could earn more, but that doesn’t seem to be the case.

The Women’s African Cup of nations(WAFCON) are not happy with how the South African Football Association (SAFA) has handled their World Cup preparations and also their bonus issue.

The match will be the last for the team on home soil before they depart for the WC in Australia and New Zealand.

The South African women’s team kick off their campaign against Sweden on the 23 July in Wellington.

Last week Banyana coach Desiree Ellis said no player was guaranteed a spot in starting 11 at World Cup.

“We have to make sure that they get better, we have to make sure that they stay competitive and the competitive nature comes with wanting to be in that starting lineup. I am sure when you want to go to the World Cup, you don’t just want to be sitting on the bench, you want to make sure that you start and I think that’s where the competitive urge is going to come from,” she said.
