Mamelodi Sundowns have given an update on Themba Zwane, confirming their club captain is out of hospital and “resting at home” after suffering a deep cut to his upper right eye” that saw him being stretchered off against Kaizer Chiefs.

Zwane was accidentally caught by Yusuf Maart’s boot in the MTN8 semi-final first leg between Chiefs and Sundowns on Saturday.

‘Mshishi’ was replaced by Lesbian Nku and had to be stretchered off the pitch, in worrying scenes for the club and onlookers.

However, the club have now confirmed that the 34-year-old is recovering at home after he was “stabilised on the pitch” and taken to hospital for routine checks.

“In Saturday’s MTN8 semi-final first leg Themba “Mshishi” Zwane sustained a deep cut to his upper right eye,” the club stated on Monday.

“He received immediate medical attention onfield and was stabilised at the stadium. Zwane was later sent to hospital for further observation and a precautionary scan in terms of concussion protocols.

“The good news is that he is well and resting at home under the supervision of the club’s medical department.”

Zwane is expected to be replaced in Hugo Broos’ Bafana Bafana squad, with the Belgian tactician set to announce his replacement later on Monday.

Sundowns return to action on 16 September when they will face Bumamuru in the CAF Champions League second preliminary round.
