Since April 2022, the South African Police Service (#SAPS) has gone through a rigorous firearm destruction process to remove 54,517 firearms from circulation as part of an ongoing effort to improve public safety.

Today, in Vanderbijlpark, Gauteng, over 15,700 firearms were destroyed. These firearms were either seized during crime prevention operations, voluntarily surrendered by individuals, or forfeited to the State.

The National Commissioner, General Fannie Masemola, personally oversaw the firearm destruction process, ensuring its proper execution.

Prior to the destruction, all firearms underwent meticulous ballistic testing to determine if they had been used in any criminal activities. The SAPS affirms that all firearms have been cleared and are no longer connected to any illicit incidents.

As part of the comprehensive initiative known as #OperationShanela, the police have thus far recovered and/or confiscated close to 800 firearms through high-density operations.

The South African Police Service (SAPS) is dedicated to finding and removing illegal firearms and ammunition from South African streets. The continued danger that these firearms pose to the citizens of the country necessitates a proactive response of this nature.
