R60 000 luxurious mkhukhu causes a stir

He has a one-of-a-kind shack, and everyone stops to take photos of it. But Robert Chitowe does not mind. The 40-year-old from Marikana informal settlement in Hermanus, Cape Town, owns a double storey shack.

He said he spent more than R60 000 to build it.

“I built the shack in 2018. I sell meat and people enjoy eating and drinking here,” he said.

“I have lost count of the people who have taken pictures inside my shack. I don’t have a problem with it because it shows it’s beautiful.”

Robert said he wanted people to realize there is no need to stay in town to have what they wanted.

“It doesn’t matter where you are. The most important thing is courage and passion. If you want something, do anything to see it through,” Robert said.

He said no one owns a double-storey house like his.

“I can go on top and see the whole of Zwelihle. You could swear I’m in the suburbs.”

Robert used his shack to market his business.

“It is not only about having a beautiful shack, it’s also marketing,” he said.

“When people ask how I built it and how much it cost, I sell my business to them.”

Robert said he renovated the place to attract more people.

Nozuko Ndlondlo (39) said: “I saw people chilling there and I had some safety concerns. I decided to visit the area. It feels safe and neat.”
