Morton Unsure About Spurs Future After Promotion

Cape Town Spurs midfielder Michael Morton is yet to make his decision on his future after gaining promotion with the club.

Morton is one of the much-traveled players roped in by Shaun Bartlett at the beginning of the season to add experience to the youthful squad.

The 34-year-old has turned back the years in Spurs’ midfield throughout the 2022/23 campaign and scored a crucial goal against Maritzburg United in the promotional play-offs, which saw Spurs claiming all three points in the important home game over the Team of Choice.

He told this publication that he was considering retiring, had they not gained promotion to the DStv Premiership, but is now considering staying for another season.

“It’s a mixture of emotions, fun and joy. Obviously we wanted to do it the easy way by winning outright promotion but we decided to take a more difficult ride, it was really tough but worth while in the end,” Morton told iDiski Times.

“I had this discussion with the club just after we missed out on promotion, I said to them if we didn’t get promotion, I was gonna retire. So now that we in the top division I will have to reconsider.”

Spurs missed out on direct promotion after being overtaken by Polokwane City on the final day of the Motsepe Foundation Championship, but won the promotional play-offs after securing a goalless draw with Maritzburg United at Harry Gwala Stadium last week.

On Monday, the club announced a two-year contract extension for coach Shaun Bartlett.
