Former Orlando Pirates captain Lucky Lekgwathi believes that not only he and Orlando Pirates supporters have been impressed with the side’s start to the 2023/24 season, but even fans from their close rivals.
The Buccaneers are currently placed fourth on the DStv Premiership log with seven points from four matches, have qualified for the second round of the CAF Champions League and the semi-finals of the MTN8, where they beat Stellenbosch FC 2-1 away from home to put one foot into the final.
Speaking to iDiski Times writer Lethabo Kganyago in the current edition of the newspaper, Lekgwathi said ever since the quarter-final round of the MTN 8 he has been eager to watch his former side compete against any team, adding that even the opposing fans can’t deny how good Pirates have looked so far.
“After the quarter-final performance I’ve been looking forward to watching Pirates play any team” Lekgwathi told iDiski Times.
“They have impressed me so much and I don’t think it’s just me and Orlando Pirates supporters but I think even Kaizer Chiefs supporters, Sundowns and everyone has been talking about Orlando Pirates. It shows that they didn’t go to Spain for nothing.”
Lekgwathi even went further to say the current squad reminds him of the treble-winning Pirates side that he captained, which was famously called ‘Bucselona’ by the club’s fans.
“You know the way they were playing they reminded me of the name that they used to call us when we were winning trebles during the same time FC Barcelona were also winning trebles. They used to call us ‘Bucselona’,” he stated.
“I have been very impressed and I’m looking forward to seeing them playing against any team.”
