Ex-Pirates Coach Lands Feyenoord Job

Former Orlando Pirates goalkeeper coach Jyri Nieminen has been appointed as new goalkeeper coach of Dutch giants Feyenoord.

Nieminen, 35, joined Pirates ahead of the 2019/20 season to replace Andrew Sparks, but left in December 2020 to join New York Red Bulls.

The Finland-born coach had been in the United States until make his return to Europe, joining the 2022/23 Eredivisie champions, as confirmed by the club on Thursday.

“The care with which Feyenoord approached me gives me a very good feeling,” says Nieminen. 

“It fills me with pride that I am now part of this great club. I look forward to working with a team of good keepers who also have enormous potential.”

Before joining Pirates, Nieminen worked as goalkeeper coach for Major League Soccer outfit San Jose Earthquakes.

Nieminen started his coaching career with the Football Association of Finland and served several clubs from his homeland before making the move abroad.

He also worked for the Aspire Academy and Qatar U17 National Team between 2015 and 2018.
