The East London tavern tragedy has made international headlines after 21 people, mostly teenagers, died in the early hours of Sunday morning.

The Eastern Cape Liquor Board has revoked the license of a tavern owner in Scenery Park with immediate effect.

The Eastern Cape Liquor Board says it will lay criminal charges against the owner of the Enyobeni tavern at Scenery Park in the Eastern Cape, where at least 21 young people were killed on Sunday morning.

Spokesperson Pumlani Fani says criminal charges will also be laid against the license holder for the blatant contravention of the Eastern Cape Liquor Act which stipulates that no alcohol shall be sold to persons under the age of 18.

The victims were celebrating the end of exams when it is alleged that someone sprayed pepper spray or some sort of gas resulting in chaos.

The victims had no visible injuries and graphic photographs doing the rounds on social media show the children lying on the floor as if they are sleeping.
