Kaizer Chiefs coach Arthur Zwane has shared his views on the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) following Ashley Du Preez’s disallowed goal against Orlando Pirates in the Carling Cup semifinal clash at FNB Stadium in Soweto.

Du Preez had the ball in the back of the net in the 78th minute of the Soweto derby, but the goal was flagged for offside, much to the disbelief of Zwane and the Amakhosi faithful, who out came in their numbers.

Chiefs lost the game 6-5 on penalties following a goalless draw after regulation time.

According to a report on Timeslive, VAR was supposed to the trialled in South Africa for the first time during the one-day four-team friendly competition Carling Cup.

However, it was not used as the man in the middle in the Chiefs and Pirates game made several questionable decisions, including the Du Preez offside call.

“We could have capitalised even first half, although we were not in the game,” Zwane told the media.

“But in the second half, we knew that an opportunity would come, and it came as we scored a goal that was denied by the linesman or the referee; I don’t know, but it is part of the game.

“I don’t like to complain about the referees. They also make mistakes just like us; we are all human beings. And as you know, penalties are a lottery.

The Amakhosi went on to give his opinion on the idea of the introduction of VAR in the DStv Premiership.

ZWANE’S VIEWS ON VAR

“I didn’t even know, but we need that [VAR being trialled in Carling Cup], although for me, at some point, it delays the progress of the game,” he said.

“Sometimes it kills the momentum because you are going to have to wait all the time when there is something that has happened.

“So, we are trying, by all means, to take the game to another level of which we will allow it to take place. That will be a plus for South African football at large.”
