The arrest of well-known traditional healer Gogo Maweni, born Ann Makgotso Mofokeng, has unveiled troubling details about her legal troubles, including a 2019 assault case and allegations linking her to multiple murder investigations.

Maweni was apprehended on January 19, 2025, in an operation conducted by Mondeor SAPS. Authorities tracked her down from Failands to Mondeor before making the arrest. She appeared in the Protea Magistrates’ Court the following day, facing charges of assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm.

The assault case dates back to December 17, 2019, in Dlamini, Soweto, where Maweni allegedly struck the complainant in the mouth with a bottle. According to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), the case had been temporarily closed after the complainant became untraceable. However, new developments revived the investigation, leading to Maweni’s arrest.

In addition to the assault charge, Maweni is reportedly under investigation for four murder cases connected to incidents in Eldorado Park, Mondeor, Orange Farm, and Bekkersdal. These allegations have intensified public and legal scrutiny of the healer’s activities.

Following her court appearance, Maweni’s bail application was postponed to January 27 to allow time for further investigations and consideration of her alleged involvement in the other cases.

Fellow traditional healer Gogo Skhotheni, who had previously hinted at Maweni’s potential criminal activities, declined to comment in detail. She stated, “I would like to refrain from saying anything about the matter because I don’t want to jeopardize the case as it’s still in court and investigations are underway.”

The postponement of the bail application underscores the seriousness of the charges against Maweni. As investigations continue, the court’s focus remains on ensuring a thorough examination of all allegations.
