Dr. Maweni, whose real name is Makgotso Mofokeng (38), faced a dramatic turn of events during her appearance at the Protea Magistrates Court on Monday, 20 January. The well-known sangoma attempted to claim she had no prior criminal record, but the prosecutor revealed otherwise, stating that records indicated she had a past conviction.

The court was informed that further time would be required for the state to secure the details of her criminal record from the investigating officer. Maweni’s defense acknowledged awareness of the previous matter but argued it had been withdrawn without further instructions.

Dressed in a grey top and track pants, light green slippers, and sporting fresh cornrows, long eyelashes, and manicured nails, Maweni appeared in a packed courtroom. She faces charges of assaulting a relative of her ex-boyfriend in December 2019, an incident for which she was only arrested on Sunday, 19 January.

Adding complexity to the case, the court learned that Maweni is a mother of four and currently pregnant with twins. The state opposed her bail application, citing her prior conviction and ongoing investigations into her history. Prosecutors requested a seven-day period to finalize her profiling and secure a docket and bail statement related to her previous case.

The case has been postponed to Monday, 27 January, with Maweni remaining in custody. The delay allows the state to gather evidence and clarify details of her past conviction.

Allegations have also surfaced linking Maweni to five murder investigations in Eldorado Park, Moroka, Orange Farm, Mondeor, and Bekkersdal. Gauteng police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Mavela Masondo stated that while investigations are ongoing, there is no confirmation of her involvement in these cases at this stage.

Maweni’s legal troubles and the revelations of her past have sparked significant public interest, with many awaiting further developments as the formal bail application approaches.
