Zwane On Dube Return, Defends Petersen

Kaizer Chiefs head coach Arthur Zwane has discussed Austin Dube’s return and also defended goalkeeper Brandon Petersen after their 3-2 DStv Premiership loss to Golden Arrows at the Peter Mokaba stadium on Sunday.

Dube was the replacement for Edmilson Dove who missed the clash with flu, while Eric Mathoho also couldn’t make the squad after picking up a knock.

Despite the 3-2 defeat, Zwane believes the defender did fairly well, considering this was his first appearance of the 2022/23 campaign.

“I think he did fairly well, to be quite honest he hasn’t been playing in a very long time,” he said when asked by iDiski Times at the Peter Mokaba Stadium.

“When we gave him the opportunity today you know I think he did well. We didn’t expect too much from him but to be quite honest, for a player who hasn’t been playing for quite some time he did very well and I’m very proud of him.”

Meanwhile, Zwane believes that Petersen cannot be blamed for the three goals they conceded on the day.

Petersen had a good record going into the match with three clean sheets. The coach believes his keeper should have received from support from his teammates, especially the defense.

“Realistically we can’t blame him for conceding three goals. I think the defenders should have done better to help him as well as the midfielders because it is a team sport.

“Unfortunately he conceded three goals and as I said it is our responsibility now, to lift him up because he has been doing very well.

“There’s nothing he could have done in all those goals according to me. As I said in terms of defending, we could have done better.”

Chiefs now turn their attention to the Soweto Derby this Saturday against Orlando Pirates at FNB Stadium (15h30).
