New Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Bongani Zungu could not hide his delight after sealing a sensational return to the DStv Premiership champions.

On Saturday, Downs unveiled Zungu as their new player in front of a packed crowd at Loftus Versfeld Stadium ahead of their 4-0 win over Chiefs.

The 29-year-old midfielder left Downs in 2016 to join Vitoria Guimaraes but now returned to South Africa after six years in Europe and following the expiry of his contract with Ligue 2 side Amiens.

“It feels great to be back, the welcome I got from the fans was amazing, even before I signed I could see on social media how fans were reacting to me being linked to the club, from there onwards I just knew I would feel welcome,” Zungu said on Mamelodi Sundowns TV.

“The atmosphere was amazing at the stadium, I couldn’t be happier and it feels good to be back, to meet everyone, the staff, the people who’ve been here the longest time, the kit man, the security guards. I feel very happy to be back and coming to start.

“When I left Sundowns was already on a high, I came here as a young boy from AmaTuks, the club changed my life and we won trophies. To come back to see how the club has improved with even more quality players, it was influential in my decision in coming back here – I’m very excited about it.”

He won four trophies during his first stint at Chloorkop, two PSL titles, one Nedbank Cup trophy and one Telkom Knockout, making 68 appearances for Masandawana after joining from AmaTuks in 2013.
