Mamelodi Sundowns’ new signing Bongani Zungu has selected his former teammate Hlompho Kekana’s shirt number upon his return to the club.
Sundowns announced the blockbuster signing at a sold-old Loftus Versveld on Saturday afternoon before thrashing Kaizer Chiefs 4-0, much to the delight of the Yellow Nation.
His eagerly anticipated return has brought out much debate over which shirt number he will wear, having previously turned out in the number 34 when he first arrived back in 2013 as a fresh-faced talent from AmaTuks.
“We decided the number eight would be good for me, the guy who wore the jersey here is a legend here, I played with him, he was my midfield partner, I’m sure he would be happy to know that we decided that jersey number eight is the jersey,” Zungu said.
“It’s a heavy jersey, it’s a guy who achieved a lot with the club since I come back a man, a matured experienced player, I think I will try my best not to drop the level of the jersey, just to keep it as top as it is.”
Zungu will now be aiming to get back to fitness and fight for a place in the already star-studded Masandawana line-up who look set to compete on all fronts for silverware in the 2022/23 campaign.
