The musician we all love to hate was born and bred in the province of Soweto. While growing up, the notion of being rich and famous was far-fetched for him but paved the way for him in the competitive entertainment industry. Zakes Bantwin discovered his talent in singing when he was still a kid. He would sing in the church choir, leaving many astonished with his angelic voice.

Zakes did his high school at Nqabakazulu high school. While doing his matric, he fathered his first child, which affected his studies. He fell into depression because the thought of being a parent in high school scared him. However, he was lucky that his parents understood that he had made a mistake and allowed him to go to school even though he had impregnated a girl.

To be a trophy son, Zakes studied hard at school and passed his matric with flying colours. After passing his matric, he registered for tertiary education at the Durban University of Technology, where he studied Jazz and Music. Zakes knew he wanted to be a full-time musician, so he went to the school of music so he could improve his skills and gain more knowledge. Well, as he was in his final year for his diploma in Jazz and Music, he formed his record label called Mayonie Productions.

Zakes does not have one educational certificate; he also studied a Social Entrepreneurship Programme at Gordon Institute of Business Science, University of Pretoria. He is passionate about furthering his education and becoming the Swiss army knife business mogul in the music industry. Rumours are that Zakes is studying for another degree at the  Harvard University Business School in the United States.
