2004 | Robert Mugabe, the former president of Zimbabwe, was put up in a guesthouse after two five-star hotels turned him away due to the violation of his country’s human rights. He had come to Pretoria for the 10th anniversary of a free South Africa and President Thabo Mbeki’s inauguration.

2005 | In Japan, a commuter train with seven cars derailed and collided into an apartment block, killing 107 people, including the conductor.

2004 | The March for Women’s Lives protested the Partial-Birth Abortion Ban Act of 2003 and other abortion restrictions, bringing between 500 000 and 800 000 demonstrators to Washington, D.C., the majority of whom were pro-choice.
