What Chiefs need to do to start challenging for the title

Former Gor Mahia coach Steven Polack has revealed what Kaizer Chiefs need to do to start challenging for the PSL title.

Kaizer Chiefs were a pale shadow of themselves during the just-ended season, where they ended in fifth position.

In 30 matches, Amakhosi ended the season with 44 points on their tally. Consequently, they missed out on playing in continental championships.

It is in that season Kaizer Chiefs suffered their worst-ever league defeat record in the PSL era. They lost a record 12 times.

WHAT KAIZER CHIEFS MUST DO

And Steven Polack believes the Soweto giants must “get the right coach” if they want to take their rebuild to the next level. Arthur Zwane has struggled in his first season at the helm, and fans are calling for his head.

In an interview with FARPost, the well-travelled English manager, who has won titles in Kenya and Ghana, was blunt in his remarks.

“I think if Kaizer Chiefs get the right coach, they will be fighting for the championship next season. It’s not going to be easy for Mamelodi Sundowns,” he said.

Meanwhile, Polack opines that the Buccaneers will mount a serious challenge on Sundowns’ stranglehold of the championship.

STEVEN POLACK’S VERDICT ON PIRATES

Orlando Pirates ended the season in second position, with 24 points separating them from Sundowns. While the Tshwane giants claimed the DStv Premiership title, Orlando Pirates won two cup titles.

The Soweto giants won the MTN 8 Cup and the Nedbank Cup to cap a stellar 2022/23 campaign.

The Orlando Pirates coach Jose Riveiro proved to be in a class of his own, helping the club win two major trophies.

“He will improve them to go closer to Sundowns. So far, he has done a good job. I watched a few games from the first division and then a few in the top league.

“Already, I know Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates. I think Jose Riveiro has improved Pirates to the extent that he will challenge for more next season,” Steven Polack added.

Polack also coached in Finland, where Riveiro was based before his switch to Pirates.
