Varbergs BoIs coach Joakim Persson has given an update on the future of a South African winger.

Former Ajax Cape Town attacker Tashreeq Matthews has been making waves in the Swedish Allsvenskan, which has seen several clubs interested in his services over the past six months.

Matthews was voted the 2021 Breakout Player of the Season after scoring five goals and assisting another five strikes in 27 league games for Varbergs.

Major League Soccer club Toronto FC submitted an offer worth R16 million, but the Cape Town-born winger opted against the move as he looks to continue his development in Europe.

The 21-year-old has not had an excellent start to the 2022 season, with no goal after seven league appearances.

Speaking to Swedish media ahead of the resumption of the second half of the season, Persson revealed that the club are looking to keep the winger for the remainder of the season.

“Tashreeq Matthews and Simon Karlsson Adjei are the two players where there is the most interest among other clubs,” he said.

“There is still demand for “Tassie”, but we have said that we do not want to sell, but that we want him to do the whole season in Varbergs. It is a player who has had a weak pre-season and missed a lot for various reasons.”

He concluded by explaining that the player will be crucial for the club as they look to have a strong finish to the season.

“He came into the last match and got a red card. Therefore, we want him to have a really good autumn and help us to a contract (maintain top-flight status), then he can choose his future after that.”
