Unpaid ‘Muvhango’ Actors Reportedly Leave Meeting in Protest

According to a report by Sunday World, Muvhango, the Tshivenda language soap opera produced by the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC), is reportedly facing another financial crisis.

According to a source cited by Sunday World, actors from the soap opera Muvhango walked out of a meeting after learning they would not receive their October salaries. The source claims that the show’s producers are negotiating a contract renewal with the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC). The actors were reportedly upset because they had previously been told their contracts would end in October and they would be paid for that month. However, the new contracts offered to them allegedly state that their contracts will end in September, and they will not be paid for October.

“Now the new contracts that they [producers] want actors to sign state that their contracts will end in September instead, and that they will not be paid for October, which was not the case previously. So, they are refusing to sign the new adjusted agreements,” said the source.

An anonymous Muvhango actor stated that the show’s producers do not want to take responsibility for payments if negotiations with SABC do not cover the actors’ pay for October.

“We are the only ones affected by this, others at Skeem Saam and Generations: The Legacy never have issues when it comes to contract renewals,” said the actor.

The actor also claimed that other shows, such as Skeem Saam and Generations: The Legacy, do not have issues with contract renewals. SABC publicist Vuyo Mthembu stated that the public broadcaster could not comment on such matters as contracts between the production house and cast and crew are not the responsibility of SABC.
