The resignations of two African National Congress (ANC) Members of Parliament (MPs) were announced by Parliament spokesperson Moloto Mothapo on Monday, 30 June. While the party’s KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) branch confirmed that former Premier, Sihle Zikalala, is heading to the national government.

ANC MPs RESIGN

The Parliament spokesperson said Mervyn Dirks’s resignation was effective from 30 January, while Tshilidzi Munyai’s resignation was effective from 31 January.

The former MPs seem set to remain in the ANC. Munyai said the ANC resolved to redeploy him in the Gauteng Provincial Legislature, while Dirks said he would announce his plans in due course, but he is not leaving the party.

Dirks’ staunch opposition to the President saw him suspended from the ANC after he laid a complaint against Cyril Ramaphosa related to the controversial voice recording debacle in 2021.

Dirks was also one of the ANC MPs who effectively voted for Ramaphosa’s impeachment over the Section 89 report that said the President may have violated his oath of office by failing to report the Phala Phala robbery.

The KZN ANC said Zikalala would resign as COGTA MEC in the province ahead of his redeployment to the National Assembly.

As previously reported, Deputy President David Mabuza has also reportedly resigned. However, the Presidency is yet to make the announcement public.

The wholesale changes in the ANC are coming thick and fast ahead of a cabinet shuffle by Ramaphosa.
