Cape Town All Stars promotion push was ended, while AmaTuks also suffered a blow in the DStv Premiership promotion/relegation playoffs.

Wednesday’s encounter was the fourth round-robin fixture of the PSL promotion/relegation playoff. All Stars were desperate to get their first win, while Pretoria University was seeking maximum points in order to remain at the top.

Both teams started the game by feeling each other out, understanding the importance of the battle and not wanting to open up too much.

The first chance was created for Justice Figuareido in the eighth minute but he was unable to meet the ball in the air provided by Sirgio Kammies.

AmaTuks nearly went ahead through Singkhi Mpedi in minute 17, but his shot was cleared off the line by goalkeeper Luther Jacobs. Seven minutes later Lulama Maqoko headed chance following a free-kick over the bar.

The encounter kind of dried up a little until a mistake by Jacobs who was only making his second appearance of the campaign, was caught on the ball just outside the box by Thabang Sibanyoni, who slotted the ball into an empty net in the 44th minute.

The second stanza continued with a Sanele Barns free-kick that was handled well by Jacobs in the 47th minute. Three minutes later, Ndiviwe Mdabuka was unable to put away a great chance created by Figuareido in the opposition box.

Sibanyoni should have extended the lead but he fluffed an opportunity with only the goalkeeper to beat in the 52nd minute. Mdabuka, who came off the bench at half-time, then levelled matters two minutes later with a stunning header set up with a flighted cross by Thabo Moloisane.

A looping header that was obstructed by the sun went over the goals by Mpedi in minute 61. Five minutes later Ayanda Mvambi was caught diving within the penalty box and cautioned with a yellow card by the referee.

A corner at close range by All Stars was almost scrambled in in the 75th minute but was dealt with by Mbanjwa. A minute later, a free-kick was awarded to Tuks outside the box but was hoofed over the target. Figuareido had a chance just outside the box but ballooned it over the crossbar in the 79th minute.

Tuks almost stole the three points in injury time but fluffed a late chance from inside the box.

Tuks moved to five points on the log, while All Stars picked up their first point and Swallows have four points ahead of their clash with Igugu lekapa at the Danie Craven Stadium this Saturday at 3pm.
