Sundowns Wrap Up CAFCL Group Stages In Style

Mamelodi Sundowns wrapped up their final CAF Champions League group match as they comfortably beat Sudan’s Al Merrikh 3-0 at the FNB Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Sundowns had already secured qualification and top spot in Group A prior to this match, but have now moved to 16 points from their six games.

Al Ahly, who are second with seven points, will look to seal their place later on Sunday, when they host Al Hilal. who are third on four points. Any result other than a defeat will see Pitso Mosimane’s defending champions through.

Sundowns grabbed control of the match from the first whistle, as they were cheered on by the supporters who came to support the team.

Surprise Ralani went close in the 13th minute, after dribbling through the defence and playing a one-two with Lesedi Kapinga, Ralani’s attempt at goal hit the woodwork.

But Sundowns were in front in the 15th minute, George Maluleka heading in well from Aubrey Modiba’s corner.

Maluleka went just over with a free-kick attempt in the 28th minute, and at the break, Sundowns led 1-0.

Haashim Domingo had a glorious chance in the 53rd minute, but shot wide with the goalmouth beckoning.

Sundowns were in full control, and they added the second in the 66th minute, as Ralani broke free, before the former Cape Town City man deftly chipped the goalkeeper to make it 2-0.

And it was 3-0 in the 72nd minute, as substitute Kermit Erasmus scored a fantastic goal from just outside the box, bringing a Ralani ball down with his left foot, before volleying in with his right.

Reyaad Pieterse, who had been a spectator for much of the game, made a save in the 85th minute, as Al Merrikh looked for a consolation goal.

At the final whistle Sundowns had done the job, as they advanced unbeaten through the group stages, with five wins and a draw.
