Sundowns Record Their 13th league Win On the Bounce To Beat Galaxy

Mamelodi Sundowns stretched their winning streak to 13-game on the bounce as they flexed their muscle yet again to beat TS Galaxy 2-1 at Mbombela Stadium on Tuesday night to move to 49 points in the DStv Premiership standing.

Defender Rushine De Reuck scored in just 11th minute of the game and Peter Shalulile added the second in the 64th minute to see him go top of the PSL goal scoring to eight goals.

It could have been more for Sundowns in the second half as they were wasteful, with Gaston Sirino attacking the near post but failed to get his two shots on target – all from brilliant crosses by Thapelo Morena, but still walked away proudly with both assists.

But the win was sealed when the Uruguayan was played in by Sipho Mbule following his inter-passing with Themba Zwane to cross from the Namibian to finish off from close range.

As expected, Sundowns started well, grabbing the game by the scruff of its neck.

They rewarded themselves when De Reuck flung his head with a brilliant header from Sirino’s corner, but it came at the cost. He clashed head on with Mlungisi Mbunjana, and was left dazed. He was then taken off as he felt the full blow in his skull and Brian Onyango took his place after 16 minutes.

Sundowns came to this game having made history when they defeated Kaizer Chiefs on Saturday, as that was their 12th league win of the season, edging their own record of 2006/07 season under Gordon Igesund.

Galaxy was hoping to become the only side to beat Sundowns twice this season as they beat them in August last year.

Lefa Hlongwane had scored the winning goal on that occasion when these two sides met in Pretoria, as Galaxy joined SuperSport United as the only club to have beaten Sundowns this season.

It was a quick break attack to stun Sundowns then to score, and that was expected from them and also to soak up the pressure.

They tried this time to catch Sundowns in the same pattern, but all the attacking lines were closed.

Sundowns coach Rulani Mokwena rang in the changes in this side, bringing back Andile Jali in place of Tebogo Mokoena, who has been occupying that number 6 spot in between the two centre backs of Sundowns.

Denis Onyango also made his first appearance in the league this season, as he has been a spectator to Ronwen Williams.

Onyango, who is gunning for the unprecedented ninth league title, was virtually a spectator, as he hardly got tested in goals. However, he messed up his rare start, bringing down Orebotse Mongae in the last-minute and Junior Traore slotted what was for a consolation goal in the 95th minute to make it 2-1.
