Stellenbosch FC coach Steve Barker has reacted to the snub of his star player Junior Mendieta on the upcoming PSL Awards.
Mendiata was impressive for the Cape Windlands side throughout the entire season when given an opportunity to play. His good form led to speculations linking him with a move away from the club.
The Argentinian forward caused all sorts of trouble for the defenders and goalkeepers in SA’s top-flight. He scored 10 goals and provided nine assists in 31 matches in all competitions.
In the league, he only missed four matches. One was through suspension, and three were due to slight injury knocks.
STEVE BARKER SAYS JUNIOR MENDIATA IS BETTER THAN OTHER NOMINATED PLAYERS
According to Barker, Mendieta was robbed as he deserved to be nominated for the contributions he made for his side. Barker’s men had a fairly good season. They finished in the top six and reached Nedbank Cup semi-finals.
Barker expressed his disappointment through his tone, body language and facial expressions.
“It’s tragedy for me, I mean his numbers are far better than some of the other nominated players,” said Barker.
“He deserved to get a nomination, there’s no doubt on my mind, he should be the one of the three [players].
“He’s in the top five or six for many things, even defensive action. He’s got more goals and assists than most players put together, more tackles than most players not talking about the goalkeepers.”
WHAT STEVE BARKER IS HAPPY ABOUT TOWARDS JUNIOR MENDIATA
Barker further stated his happiness that Mendieta is improving in his game and is helping the team with goals and assists.
“He’s important to us he showed his class, his goal involvement this season have been really good, not only scoring but assisting,” added Barker.
“Disappointed for him, but happy that he’s our player and will continue to bring those numbers henceforth.”
