Stellenbosch captain Zitha Kwinika has thrown his weight behind his teammate Athenkosi Mcaba after coach Hugo Broos handed him his international debut against Guinea on Friday, writes Otis Ntshangase
The 20-year old defender came on as a substitute in the 68th minute in a 0-0 draw against Guinea.
“There are signs that Athenkosi [Mcaba] has a bright future and career. He is a great player; I hope the skills and confidence will help him do well for Bafana Bafana,” Kwinika told FARPost.
Kwinika, who previously played for Wits, Chippa and Thanda Royal Zulu, believes playing with international players will help develop Mcaba’s career.
“He’s a humble, lovely boy, and he needs to keep going, stay focused, maintain his form and fitness to reach greater heights in football. Playing for the national team with great players and against world-class players will also motivate him to become a much better player as he is improving match by match,” he said.
Mcaba has been one of the key players in defence for the Stellenbosch outfit this season, starting nine matches.
“I’m happy he’s got an opportunity to wear Bafana’s colours as it will help him improve and get exposed to football around the world. If he gets selected against the world champions France on Tuesday night, he should be calm, stay focused and take the lead from the back.”
Bafana’s encounter against France will take place on Tuesday at 2100 (CAT) in Lille as Mcaba will be looking forward to making his second international appearance.
