Spurs Youngster Heading For Belgian Trials

Cape Town Spurs’ teenage defender Liam Bern will be jetting off to Belgium in two weeks as he gets an opportunity to trial at a Belgian club.

The impressive Bern, who only recently turned 19, made thirteen appearances in all competitions for Shaun Bartlett’s side this past season.

Bern comes through in the club’s academy, and he has been there for a number of years, first training with the first team at 15, when they were still known as Ajax Cape Town.

In fact, he first came to Ikamva when he was just nine years old, after starting football at Tableview when he was seven.

After nearly a decade at the club, the then 18-year-old made his first-team debut in October 2021, just a few months after signing his first professional contract.

iDiski Times has learnt that Bern will be heading off to try his luck at KV Mechelen next month, and spend two weeks at the Antwerp club.

Speaking earlier this year on the club’s website, Bartlett, who gave Bern his debut, said he believed the defender, who is comfortable at left-back or in the middle, has the potential to go far

“I have also told him that he needs to ensure every day that he makes his potential a reality with the right attitude and discipline necessary,” Bartlett said about Bern.

“Application and taking instructions are big parts of players understanding their roles and responsibilities in their positions.

“Liam has the knowledge and capabilities to improve on a daily basis still being so young also.”
