Sekgota Sends Message To Foster After Burnley Move
Lyle Foster’s move to Burnley is richly deserved, says his national teammate Kgaogelo Sekgota.
Foster joined the Clarets from Belgian side K.V.C. Westerlo for an undisclosed fee, believed to be around €7 million, which could rise €10 million – making it a new record deal for a South African.
The 22-year-old striker penned a four-and-a-half-year deal at Turf Moor, becoming one of the Clarets’ January signings.
Being in Europe is something Sekgota is familiar with after he also had spells in Europe, starting out in Lithuania side Stumbras where he won a domestic trophy in the 2016/17 season. He then joined Portuguese side Vitoria Setubal before returning to South Africa in 2020, initially joining Swallows and from there onto the Amakhosi.
With both players knowing each other from national team duty, Sekgota sent a message of support to his Bafana Bafana teammate.
“Lyle is a good player and he deserves where he is and we are proud of him as South Africans,” said Sekgota.
“I wish him good luck and I hope God blesses him.”
The Soweto-born Foster began his career with Orlando Pirates, Chiefs’ bitter rivals, rising through the academy ranks and going onto feature 11 times for the first team.
He then earned himself a move to Ligue 1 with AS Monaco in January 2019, before joining Belgian top-flight side Cercle Brugge on a season-long loan from Monaco.
In France, he featured in 18 appearances before the season was cut short in March 2020 due to the Covid pandemic.
Foster then switched to Portuguese club Vitoria Guimareas in August later that year, before joining Westerlo on loan for the 2021-22 campaign.
Westerlo had signed him permanently during the off season, after he impressed during his loan last season.

He now left the Belgium club having scored eight goals this season and assisting three, before former Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany came calling for his signature this month, as they look to continue to attack the number one spot in the English Championship.
