South African artist, Samthing Soweto has been mercilessly mocked on social media after showing off a slimmer frame.

But in the wake of celebrity suicides from stars like Riky Rick and Patrick Shai, fans are calling on others to be kind.

Over recent months, Samthing Soweto has shown visible weight loss on his social media accounts.

The singer’s last album Isphithiphithi was released in 2019, and since then he has been keeping a low profile whilst working on new music.

Whilst Samthing Soweto has not directly commented on his appearance or health, he has posted videos of pics of himself working out. Samthing is also fond of physical activities like hikes and has even committed to running five kilometres a day.

However, many fans think his changing appearance is due to stress and even mental health problems. This, after Samthing Soweto posted a video online In February reacting to the death of Riky Rick.

Looking forlorn, the star said to his fans: “Life is tough, let’s try and take care of each other, as much as we can. It’s not easy. Take care of your family, life is really tough, it’s really tough.”

Whilst Samthing Soweto could do with all the support he can get, a number of trolls have taken to social media to body shame him following his latest post.

On Friday 20 May, the star posted a selfie after getting a haircut, which he claimed was courtesy of “Andrew”.

But instead of commenting on his fresh new fade, followers mocked Samthing Soweto over his appearance instead.

Cebo E. Mancinza: “My brother you don’t look good. What’s happening”

Dj Thob’zin SA Gain: “What happened to you my brother you look so sick”

AyaKiid Mč: “Whoever Andrew is…. he will not see heaven for what he did to you”

Other fans, however, called on the public not to be sympathetic to the star

Chrizlly Rsa: “This is the reason why celebrities go through depression, y’all are bugging them”

Portia Matsimela: “In a world where u can be anything be nice. Cyberbullying at its best disguised as innocent fun and jokes. We have truly lost our humanness as people. It’s sad”

Luhle Cweni: “That’s why most celebrities suffer from depression then when they commit suicide then y’all act like y’all cared about them. When all you guys ever did was turn everything into a joke”

Makgabo Amogelang: “Please be kind to Samthing Soweto. He might be going through something & but cyberbullying is not something he wants to deal with right now. Don’t do that guys, he’s human too”
