Rulani Defends Downs After Broos Outcry

Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Rulani Mokwena says the club are transparent about their injuries amid Hugo Broos’ recent complaints.

Broos stated at the start of camp on Monday at the HPC in Tshwane that Khuliso Mudau and Thapelo Maseko being ruled out through injury and then featuring for Sundowns in the match before camp – in two separate national team call-ups – was not amusing.

However, this was added to Percy Tau pulling out of the squad due to personal reasons and featuring for Al Ahly this weekend – but Masandawana coach Mokwena has lept to the defence of his club stating he will speak to Broos over the misleading public discourse.

“Mudau was injured, he wasn’t called up, he missed a couple of games for us, he missed Stellies, Chiefs and was also suspended. But the reality is, one thing I like about Sundowns and you have to give them credit, we post our injuries on social media before every match,” Mokwena said in response to Broos recent concerns.

“We give very detailed updates on injuries. I don’t think it’s fair to say Sundowns don’t communicate about injuries of players, it’s far-fetched and I have to come to the defence of the club in that instance.

“I think the club goes out of its way to make sure that, not only for Bafana coach but for Sundowns supporters, they wanna know when some of their best players are not on the pitch and they want to know why.

“The club goes out of its way to give as much information and clarity with regards to the availability and non-availability of our players.

“It’s a little bit far-fetched to put the blame on the football club and even though I’ll speak to the Bafana head coach about that statement, I think it’s important from a public perspective I come to the defence of the football club in this instance.”

Sundowns have seven players out of the final 23-man squad set to face eSwatini on Friday at FNB Stadium and Ivory Coast next Tuesday in Abidjan.
