Newly-appointed Orlando Pirates head coach Jose Riveiro earned a great deal of respect during his time in Finland.

Riveiro was unveiled as the new Pirates coach on Saturday.

The Spanish coach, who worked in Finland from 2014 until last year, was highly regarded for the work he did with Inter Turku, where he turned the team into a serious title challenger.

He spent just over two years at Turku as manager, having previously been an assistant at FC Honka, PK-35 Vantaa and HJK.

The Spaniard had worked as a youth coach prior to that in his country, most notably at Celta Vigo.

Although they were unable to win the Veikkausliiga, Turku did finish as runners-up in both 2019 and 2020.

Prior to Riveiro’s arrival at Turku, the 2008 champions, had six seasons of mediocrity, where apart from one fourth-place finish, had ended in the bottom half of the table five times.

iDiski Times reached out to a football expert in Finland, who said Riveiro had done good work with Turku, turning them into title contenders.

“Jose Riveiro made a good impression while he was here,” the source in Finland told iDiski Times.

“He seems to know his stuff. He made Inter Turku a serious title contender during his time here.”
