President Ramaphosa: SA has required skills to end load shedding

Published

There is no reason why South Africa should have to endure power cuts, given the skills and resources at the country’s disposal, according to President Cyril Ramaphosa.

This is despite Eskom CEO Andre de Ruyter saying the utility does not have the required skills to maintain its plants.

Ramaphosa made the remarks in his weekly letter to South Africans.

He has promised an announcement of additional measures to ensure a stable electricity supply.

The President says generating units will come back online this week, easing the current power shortfall.

He has pointed to current interventions, such as the renewable energy procurement programme, to stabilize the grid.

This includes Eskom making land available for private investment in renewable energy projects.

Ramaphosa says law enforcement agencies are working hard to tackle sabotage, theft, and fraud at the power utility.
