Pitso Opens Up On Ahly Return Talks

Three-time CAF Champions League-winning coach Pitso Mosimane has suggested his time at Al Ahly is over amid links with a potential return to the Egyptian giants.

Mosimane left the Club of the Century via mutual consent back in June after requesting to leave the club, where he won two Champions League titles, back to back, two CAF Super Cup titles, the Egypt Cup and two bronze medals at the FIFA Club World Cup.

His successor Ricardo Soares, who was roped in from Portuguese top-flight club Gil Vicente and has been lauded as one of the most promising coaches in his homeland has found life tough to replace him with seven wins, four draws and two defeats which have seen them fall out of contention of winning the Egyptian Premier League title.

There have been calls from former players and supporters now for Mosimane to return to the club, but he feels his chapter at the Red Devils reached its conclusion when asked by iDiski Times this afternoon at SAFA House, whether he would consider returning, as Ahly are one of the few clubs in Africa who could potentially afford his services,

“I don’t like the afford part, I like the football part,” Mosimane said in reference to African clubs who could lure him back to the touchline.

“I think football will affect the financial part, so you must do the right job first. But I went there and I took my team, Kabelo [Rangoaga], Musi [Matlaba], Kyle [Solomons] and we had the mandate to do.

“You know where Al Ahly was with international tournaments and where Al Ahly was with local tournaments, with the local tournaments, they were always strong, they were winning the league and when I got there the league was already won.

“I finished the league that was already won but I’m happy to be a part of that. When we handed over the trophy and medals [I couldn’t] sit there on the side when I finished the last seven games, so I had to be part of the team, it would have sounded bad if I was on the side.

“We won a lot of things and I’m happy to be in the archives of Al Ahly with all the trophies that we won and repetitions also, we had a mandate, we fulfilled the mandate and we’re happy with what we’ve done and that’s where we will end, we did what we were supposed to do.

“That’s it – I don’t want to comment on what’s happening in Cairo, it’s not my space.”
