Al Ahly have announced the shock decision to part ways with Pitso Mosimane after a crunch meeting between the coach and the club’s management took place.

The Club of the Century lost the CAF Champions League final 2-0 to Wydad Athletic Club in Casablanca, Morocco on 30 May.

It was Mosimane’s first defeat in a knockout game in the CAF Champions League since joining Al Ahly, after lifting back-to-back CAFCL titles in 2019/20, when he took over from Rene Weiler at semi-final stage, and 2020/21.

There had been question marks over the coach’s future after several club legends had asked for Mosimane’s sacking and the club had publicly announced two meetings with the coach. On Sunday, Executive Director Said Shalaby had insisted that Mosimane “will stay” and there are “no disputes”.

On Monday, however, Al Ahly announced they have parted ways with the coach by mutual consent.

Overall, Mosimane has lifted five trophies with the Cairo giants, two CAFCLs, two CAF Super Cups and one Egyptian Cup. Mosimane leaves Al Ahly with the club sitting in third place on the log, having four games in hand over Zamalek, who have collected seven points more.

Despite all his on-field success, Mosimane – the first African coach from outside of Egypt to coach Al Ahly – found himself continuously in the cross fire by Al Ahly legends and local media.

He leaves the club after 97 games in charge, only losing 10 and with an average points tally of 2.24 per game.
