No traditional ceremony no surname! Somizi refuses his daughter Bahumi his surname as she doesn’t believe in ancestors

Somizi Mhlongo runs a reality show called Living The Dream with Somizi; he shows off his day-to-day life in the show. His reality show is centred on his family (daughter Bahumi and his ex-wife  Palesa Madisakwane). In the recent episode of Living The Dream with Somizi,  Bahumi disclosed that she wanted to change her surname to Mhlongo. She has been using her mother’s surname Madisakwane from birth, and she feels it is high time she reconnects with her father by using his surname.

Somizi was happy with Bahumi’s decision, and he told her the procedure to be followed for her to be a Mhlongo. He told Bahumi that a traditional ceremony should be done to acknowledge the ancestors that their lost daughter is back. After sharing his beliefs, Somizi was shocked by her daughter’s reaction.

Bahumi told his dad that she doesn’t believe in her ancestors and is unwilling to engage in them so she can get a surname. In her own words, while on Living The Dream with Somizi, Bahumi said:

I don’t believe in engaging with my ancestors. I’ve always respected it and whenever there’s a ceremony, I’m there to help. I do it because I honour you and respect your culture. It’s not something I necessarily believe in. We believe in different things and in this sense it’s about me, I want to do things my way.  I know you and my mother want me to do things customarily, but I don’t want to.

Her response got into Somizi, and he refused to give her his surname. Replying to her daughter, Somizi said:

You don’t just change a surname. We need to talk to the ancestors so you can be formally introduced and welcomed. We’ll have to find common ground where we can both be comfortable. I obviously want to change your surname, but it’s not going to be on your terms. Ancestors will be angry at me. They’ll ask me why I never consulted with them. So I’ll have to consult with them on your behalf

Well, Bhahumi is not going to change her mind about what she believes in. She did not just end by confronting her dad that she doesn’t believe in ancestors, but she told Somizi point blank that she would not attend any rational ceremony.

After the end of episode eight of Living The Dream with Somizi, Bhahumi was on top trend on Twitter as Mzansi was impressed by how she was standing with her decision. Many commented that she is stubborn like her dad, and they can’t wait for the next episode.
