Marumo Gallants incumbent coach Dylan Kerr, who officially is the club’s consultant until he can sort out his work permit, will have continue to be in the stands, even in the CAF Confederations Cup this coming weekend.
Kerr is well known as a coach in the African continent, as he coached multiple teams around. He started his journey in the colors of Mpumalanga Black Aces as the assistant coach working with Sammy Troughton.
After a brief stint with Hai Phong in China, he became a child of Africa as he led teams like Simba SC of Tanzania, Gor Mahia of Kenya, Black Leopards (twice), Baroka FC, TTM (twice) and recently Swallows FC.
Despite being in South Africa since November 2018, the 56-year-old has struggled to get his work permit, as he continues to be in the stands for Gallants, who named him a “consultant”, while assistant coach Raymond Mdaka moved to interim head coach role after Dan Malesela was placed on special leave.
The Malta-born tactician explained to this publication how difficult it is to give instructions to the players from the stands.
“It’s always difficult, especially when you need to speak in a certain way to players and up in the stands you can’t. So it’s hard, especially when you need to either adjust the dynamics of the game,” Kerr told iDiski Times.
“You try to get what your plan is and how to motivate before the game but a simple thing as a set-piece to organise and keep players alive is hard, especially at our home ground because you’re far from the playing field.
“The truth is as long as your technical team can understand our mentality it’s ok but we all see different things from attacking to defending, even players changing but at the end of the day it falls on the head coach.”
Having experienced this before in his coaching days at the nest, Kerr explained that he is more calm than before.
“I’m no stranger [to it], even now I’ve learnt to be more relaxed,” he added.
“I trust my assistants and so far only a few times have I got involved because up there you see things better and more clear the good and the bad.”
With Kerr still awaiting his work permit, he will have to remain in the stands when Gallants host Al-Akhdar in the CAF Confederations Cup on Sunday.
