Mzansi celebs have been weighing in on a fatal shooting that took place at a Braamfontein liquor outlet on Monday involving two law enforcement officers. A video of the incident in which a member of the Johannesburg metro police department (JMPD) was allegedly gunned down by a police officer has been circulating on social media, opening up debates about violence involving guns.

Nadia Nakai: Terrified by Desensitization

Taking to her Twitter timeline, rapper Nadia Nakai said she was terrified by how people close to the scene were seemingly not scared. “That video of the man getting shot outside a club in Braam, the thing is, I didn’t hear screams and mayhem after the shots were fired. It’s like everyone, including the person taking the video, is desensitised. That scares me,” she tweeted.

Sol Phenduka: A Teachable Moment

Kaya 959 DJ and podcaster Sol Phenduka said the incident needed to be a teachable moment. “Physically fighting a total stranger is wild behaviour. What if he is a hardened criminal fresh from prison or a really dangerous person? What if they have a gun? What if he’s just a mad man, ready to kill ? So many what ifs. People really gamble with their lives,” he wrote.

Investigation Underway

Speaking to TimesLIVE on Tuesday, the Independent Police Investigative Directorate confirmed it was investigating the murder. “Ipid is investigating the circumstances surrounding the death,” said Ipid spokesperson Robbie Raburabu. He said no-one had been arrested. “The case will be investigated before any arrests follow.”
