Orlando Pirates have bagged another R8 million in prize money after lifting a record-breaking fourth MTN8 trophy – and have also earned more than any other side in MTN8 history.

Kaizer Chiefs were the first MTN8 champions back in 2008 beating Sundowns on penalties.

However, the Buccaneers have lifted the trophy four times – more than any other Premier Soccer League side, leading to them being allowed to keep the current trophy for life.

Pirates earned R8 million for winning the competition this year, while the other seven participants received R800 000. The Sea Robbers also won the competition in 2010, 2011 and 2020.

Chiefs (2008 & 2014) and SuperSport United (2017 & 2019) have won it twice and the other MTN8 champions are Golden Arrows (2009), Moroka Swallows (2012), Platinum Stars (2013), Ajax Cape Town (2015), Bidvest Wits (2016), Cape Town City (2018) and Mamelodi Sundowns (2021).

Each of them earned R8 million when they lifted the trophy. However, each club also received R800 000 from MTN for just participating in the MTN8 – with SuperSport United being the only team that has taken part in all 14 editions of the tournament since 2008.

As a consequence, Matsatsansa have earned R26.4 million overall – an amount only bettered by quadruple winners Pirates with R40 million. Chiefs complete the podium of the highest MTN8 earners with R25.6 million.

Sundowns, meanwhile, sit in fourth place, having pocketed R17.6 million from their 11 appearances in the competition.
