Mamelodi Sundowns co head coach Manqoba Mngqithi says that despite having already qualified for the CAF Champions League knockout stages, they will show Saturday’s match against Al Merrikh the proper respect.

Sundowns have already qualified in top position in Group A, and are currently on 13 points after 5 games.

Mngqithi says they want to improve on how they did last season, when they also get 13 points, and he says this is an opportunity to improve the benchmark they set.

“For us, it really does not mean much the fact that we’ve already secured a place in the quarter-final,” Mngqithi said at the pre-match press conference.

“I think I said it before, our biggest competition is ourselves, we have a responsibility to improve or to better our benchmarks. “And our benchmark is the 13 points we got last season and we have a responsibility to better that.

“Because it is very important for us as a club to minimize possibilities of seeing how stressful it is when you lose a match.

“So we try and make sure that we give this match the respect that it requires and we go out there with a mentality to win because that is very important in how we want to finish the season. As it is now we’re settled.

“In the past two years, we have only lost three matches. And that for us is not important, but to try and make sure that we minimize the possibilities of losing matches.”
