South Africa’s boys and girls’ teams registered mixed fortunes on the zonal CAF African Schools Championship opening day on Saturday afternoon in Malawi.

South African school Clapham High trounced Seychelles’ Ile Perseverance 3-0 at Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe in a boys’ contest.

Sibusiso Tslomane scored a hattrick to steer Clapham to the emphatic win in front of CAF president Dr Patrice Motsepe.

However, the start was bumpy for South Africa girls of Edendale Technical who lost 1-0 to their Malawian hosts Malindi Secondary School.

Victoria Mkwala scored the only goal of the game against the South Africans.

Mkwala had also scored a double in Malindi’s Group A opening 5-0 win over Anse Boileau from Seychelles.

The two wins pushed Malindi to the semifinal of the five-day CAF competition involving Southern Africa schools.

Now, Edendale will switch attention to their next game against Anse Boileau on Sunday.

Both teams will be gunning for a place in the semifinals.

There was one game involving Group B girls’ teams with Botswana’s Mothamo JSS settling for a 0-0 draw with GS Ningha from Comoros.

Angola’s School 7024 C.Ledo, who have arrived in the Malawi capital late, will compete the three-member group joining Mothamo and Ningha.

The games are the Cosafa block qualifiers for the CAF African Schools Championship.

The tournament involves players aged 12 and 15.

Boys’ and girls’ competitions are being played concurrently.

Each team on the pitch will consist of eight players and matches last 40 minutes, two periods of 20 minutes separated by a 10-minute break.

There are unlimited substitutions, meaning coaches can keep rotating the players they have on the pitch.

The total prize money in the first year is US$4-million, according to Cosafa website.

The amount will be allocated from the US$10-million donation from the Motsepe Foundation.

The prize money for the winning boys school and the winning girls school are the same.
