South African midfielder Katlego Mashigo has opened up about his first season in Northern Ireland.

The 21-year-old joined Portadown FC in the January transfer window but quickly established himself in their midfield as they had to go through play-offs to maintain their top-flight status for the upcoming season.

Mashego was one of the club’s mid-season reinforcements as they looked to avoid the drop and the midfielder played a key role in assisting The Ports to maintain their Premier League status.

Now back in his home town of Pretoria, the anchor caught up with FARPost and looked back at his first season with his new club which recently extended his contract by another year.

“Last season was just a real learning curve for me definitely being in an environment where every game matters and having to perform week in, week out was a massive learning opportunity for me and one I will look back on with pride,” he explained.

“I can only thank the gaffer and everyone at the club for giving me the opportunity to come in during the January window and being put straight in. Also having the fans immediately cheer me on gave me the best motivation to really show them what I’m about and try to help the club stay in the league and by the grace of God we managed to do it,” a relieved Mashigo continued.

The former Fleetwood Town youngster also shared his thoughts on having to maintain their top division status under very dramatic and nervous circumstances.

“It was a real rollercoaster, but credit to all the boys every single one of them dug deep when it mattered and got important results which showed the character within our team and what we are capable of doing and hopefully we can carry on the same hunger and desire into next season.

“The last game was just unbelievable for us the fans came out in huge numbers to support us and we repaid them by getting the result we needed to stay up. “

Having joined his teammates in the middle of the 2021/22 campaign, the Soshanguve-born star said his eyes are firmly on doing well next season which will be his first full season in a tough demanding environment.

“Next season I just want to hit the ground running and show everyone what I’m really about because I still think I’ve got a lot to offer. Goals, Assists and playing as many games as I can and will definitely be my goal next year and hopefully we as a team can finish higher up in the league,” he concluded.
