Maseko – If Sundowns Come Calling…

SuperSport United winger Thapelo Maseko said he would reject Mamelodi Sundowns, if he had to make the decision of remaining in the DStv Premiership or moving to Europe.

The 20-year-old, who joined SuperSport four years ago after being scouted at a school tournament, has emerged as one of the hottest prospects in South African football and was named in the preliminary Bafana Bafana squad to face Liberia last month.

However, he went on to represent South Africa U23s where they fell at the final hurdle against Congo for the upcoming U23 Africa Cup of Nations.

But his displays for club and country have attracted interest from abroad, with Belgian top-flight side KVC Westerlo seeing two bids rejected by Matsatsansa, while Sundowns are said to be keen on his services.

“It’s always been a dream, for me, from the start, it’s always been a dream to play overseas, if Sundowns come and a team from overseas come, I’m going overseas,” Maseko said when asked by iDiski Times what his ideal next move would be.

But having made nine appearances for the first team last season, the 2022/23 campaign under Gavin Hunt has been his career breakthrough, with four goals and two assists in 24 games, featuring as a winger, forward, and at times even left-back, showcasing his versatility.

And he admits, remaining at the club for another season wouldn’t necessarily be bad for his career ambitions as his growth as a footballer has accelerated under the tutelage of the four-time league winner.

“I’m developing very well here at SuperSport, I’ve attracted interest from abroad working here at SuperSport, working here at SuperSport, training here at SuperSport. So for me, it won’t be a problem [to stay another season], but when an opportunity comes again…

“It’s good that I’ve attracted interest from abroad but my focus is here, and the next game [against Kaizer Chiefs].”

SuperSport sit in third place on the log, four points ahead of Amakhosi and a draw on Saturday would be enough to confirm their qualification in at least the CAF Confederations Cup next season.

They also sit two points behind Orlando Pirates in the CAF Champions League spot and could still overtake the Buccaneers, should Jose Riveiro’s side slip up in their final league games against Sekhukhune United and AmaZulu.
