Marques Opens Up On Surprise City Exit
Former Cape Town City goalkeeper and 2022/2023 PSL Goalkeeper of the Season Hugo Marques has opened up on his surprise exit from City last month.
The 36-year-old Angolan international kept 17 clean sheets in all competitions last season, and while he had originally been signed as an emergency signing due to the injury of Darren Keet, Marques soon made the No.1 jersey his own.
Last month Marques left City and was surprisingly unveiled by Petro De Luanda in Angola. His exit took many by surprise, as he requested to leave for the club for undisclosed compassionate reasons. Marques had spent a year away from his family, including his ailing father, but it is believed they will be accompanying him in Luanda.
Speaking to Rob Delport in the latest edition of iDiski Times, Marques briefly explained his situation and looked back at his time at City.
“Like I said, nobody can say I didn’t do the job. I arrived like a no-one, and I left like the best goalkeeper, and the [club’s] Player of the Season. What more can you ask?”
“I think I leave a big legacy at Cape Town City Football Club. It was a big challenge when I arrived, and at the end, nobody can say I didn’t make the job.”
Ironically City could meet Petro in the next round of the CAF Champions League preliminary qualifiers, if both teams win their opening ties.
“Yes, I hope City and Petro play in the second round of CAF Champions League, the people of both club’s deserved it,” Marques added.
“Eric [Tinkler] and his technical team deserve it big time, and a lot of players also, not all, but almost.”
