Maritzburg Confirm Massive Changes After Relegation

Maritzburg United Chairman Farook Kadodia has confirmed that the club has retrenched all it’s current non-playing staff members after the relegation from the DStv Premiership.

The Team of Choice were relegated to the Motsepe Foundation Championship after spending 15 years in the top flight.

They finished 15th after a 1-1 draw on the final day of the season against Mamelodi Sundowns, and had a chance at survival via the PSL Promotional Play-offs but failed to beat Cape Town Spurs in the final game of the play-offs.

After the match, Kadodia released a furious statement, saying he “felt betrayed” by some players.

Several members of the playing squad have since left the club, while Maritzburg also parted ways with head coach Fadlu Davids, who has since already been appointed as new assistant to Josef Zinnbauer at Raja Club Athletic, and his technical team.

Kadodia has now confirmed to this publication that the club’s leadership had to start a retrenchment process because they will receive a lot less money from the Premier Soccer League.

“The retrenchment was done purely because of the club playing in the Motsepe Foundation Championship, the grant is not the same, the money is small,” he told iDiski Times.

“So we have to retrench everyone and re-employ in the event that we are running the business again.

“It is not normal business practice. You can’t sustain by paying the same wages as it was it in the PSL top flight, but we have to re-employ.”

The mass clear-out resulted in staff member, Prince Shabalala taking to social media to share an angry open letter with former coach Davids.
