The first two games of Manchester United were a block to swallow after losing to Brentford and Brighton & Hove Albion. Manchester United match captain Bruno Fernandes praised Benni McCarthy’s influence on the team after beating Liverpool 2-1. It looked like the players had not bought into Benni’s ideas in the attacking third, and Erik Ten Hag struggled to assemble a decent team.

After Brentford, Erik Ten Hag cancelled a day off that was a day after the game. He publicly punished the whole team, including himself, and after that, the mentality and approach of the group changed. The nine days between the Brentford loss and Liverpool were hell but a few days that players had to bond and appreciate the former Bafana Bafana forward. Bruno spoke at large of Benni’s influence, and that left Mzansi impressed.

Benni lost most of the preseason, which is why he failed to get an immediate impact on the first two games.

In an interview with SuperSportTV, Bruno said Benni is a funny and positive person who always brings energy to the training ground. Benni’s vibes to the training ground could be seen on the pitch against Liverpool. The front four of Marcus Rashford, Jordan Sancho, Antony Elanga and Bruno produced a free-flowing attack that broke Liverpool’s defensive lines. Antony Martial also joined the party and provided an assist for the second goal.
