A Malawian woman startled social media users when she torched her degree certificate live on TikTok for clout.
Bridget Thapwile Soko studied for a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration (BBA) at the privately-owned Exploits University and graduated in 2018, according to Nyasa Times. After graduating, she was hopeful and optimistic that she would slide into the corporate world with ease and become an independent lady.
Unfortunately, Malawi said no.
She spent four years at home, and the advent of the video-sharing app TikTok provided an escape and an outlet to let off her frustrations.
Fed up because of unemployment, Bridget reached a tipping point. She took out her Exploits University BBA degree certificate, a box of matchsticks and her phone.
The graduate took out a coal stove and decided to get rid of her certificate. She said the degree is of no use to her since she is failing to secure a job with it or even get invited for an interview, hence her move to burn it.
She started the fire and burned her academic degree. As she did it live for her TikTok followers, she sang in her native language.
The video made its way to her alma mater Exploits University, which moved swiftly and sent her a scathing letter.
The institution’s president Desmond Bikoko wrote to her:
“We have learnt with disappointment that you recorded a video clip burning a degree that we awarded you upon completion of your studies with Exploits University and posted it on social media.
“It is our interpretation that you did this to disgrace and tarnish the image of the University. The University is therefore revoking the degree of business administration awarded to you.
“Consequently, you are no longer a graduate of Exploits University and as such your degree certificate is invalidated with immediate effect.”
