Major 20-hour water outage hitting parts of Joburg this week –

Rand Water and Joburg Water say a major water outage will be hitting Sandton this week.

The replacement of the Sandton meter isolating valve was initially scheduled for Thursday, 11 January, but was postponed due to severe weather conditions. The replacement will now start on Friday, 19 January.

The maintenance work will now start at 17h00 on Friday, 19 January 2024, and will continue until Saturday, 20 January 2024, at 13h00 – a 20-hour outage.

During this period, there will be no bulk water supply coming to the Sandton meter as water will be isolated (closed). The meter provides water to other parts of Johannesburg north.

Joburg Water and Rand Water said that they would do everything in their power to ensure that all the reservoirs supplied by the Sandton meter are filled to their maximum capacity before maintenance to ensure minimal supply interruptions.

However, customers in high-lying areas may experience low to no pressure during the maintenance period. Alternative water supply will be provided if necessary.

“Replacement of faulty infrastructure components, such as valves, is part of corrective maintenance, that is initiated after a malfunction has occurred and detected,” the utilities said.

“This type of maintenance is necessary as it ensures that the faulty part is replaced to prevent future interruption and inconvenience while extending the equipment lifespan.”
